New Doc 'American Doctor' Drops on Streaming, Offering Harrowing Gaza Insights

This week, the streaming landscape welcomes a documentary that demands your attention: American Doctor. Directed by Poh Si Teng, the film arrives on Prime Video, offering a harrowing and deeply moving portrait of the doctors risking their lives in the Gaza Strip. It’s a difficult watch, but an essential one, particularly in its unflinching gaze at the overwhelming victims of the ongoing genocide.

American Doctor focuses on three remarkable individuals: Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, Dr. Thaer Ahmad, and Dr. Mark Perlmutter. These physicians, hailing from diverse backgrounds—Palestinian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian—are united by their commitment to saving lives amidst an escalating crisis. The documentary captures the arduous reality of their work, detailing how access to Gaza is often a gamble, with approvals granted on some trips and denied for opaque reasons on others. It's a stark reminder of the geopolitical complexities and the human cost that define this conflict. As noted in a Sundance review by Dan Mecca, the film asks critical questions: “When will this end? When will this bloodshed stop? And when will the United States of America stop supporting it?” Poh Si Teng provides a clear-eyed, unrelenting look at the genocide in Gaza through the dedication of these doctors.

A Glimpse into the Heart of the Crisis

The film doesn't shy away from the devastating impact of the conflict on the ground. We witness the immense pressure these doctors face, not only the physical toll of treating an overwhelming number of casualties but also the emotional burden of working in such extreme conditions. Their dedication is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity, even when faced with immense suffering and systemic obstacles. The narrative weaves together personal stories with the broader political context, making it a powerful call for awareness and empathy. It’s a vital piece of cinema for anyone seeking to understand the realities beyond the headlines.
