Mariska Hargitay's Olivia Benson Has Crashed More Than Just Law & Order

When you think of Mariska Hargitay, you almost certainly picture Olivia Benson. For over two decades, she's been the unwavering moral compass and relentless investigator of the Special Victims Unit, becoming one of television's most enduring characters. But Benson's story isn't confined to the precinct walls of Law & Order: SVU. Hargitay, with a true dedication to her iconic role, has brought Olivia Benson into other universes, proving the character's resonance extends far beyond her original home.

While her upcoming Season 28 return in 2026 continues the SVU saga, Hargitay's been busy. From 2021 to 2025, she was a recurring presence on Law & Order: Organized Crime, sharing the screen with Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler once again. This wasn't just a brief cameo; her involvement spanned 14 episodes, weaving Benson into the fabric of a new, high-stakes narrative.

Benson's Unexpected Detours

But the crossovers don't stop at direct franchise extensions. Back in 2019, Olivia Benson herself made a memorable cameo on Saturday Night Live, a testament to the character's widespread cultural recognition. Even more significantly, Hargitay lent her formidable presence to Chicago P.D. for three episodes between 2014 and 2016. This arc saw Benson collaborating with the Intelligence Unit of the Chicago Police Department, a prime example of the interconnected ‘One Chicago’ universe created by Dick Wolf. These appearances aren't just fan service; they highlight how a well-developed character can enrich other narratives and demonstrate the creative flexibility within a shared television landscape.

A Legacy Beyond SVU

For dedicated Law & Order fans, these appearances are more than just trivia. They represent a chance to see Olivia Benson in new contexts, interacting with different characters and facing varied investigative challenges. It speaks to Hargitay's commitment to embodying Benson fully, allowing her to transcend the boundaries of a single series. The fact that Benson, and by extension Hargitay, is such a sought-after guest star underscores the profound impact the character has had on viewers and the industry alike. It’s a rare feat for an actor to maintain such a strong connection with a character for so long, let alone successfully transplant them into other successful shows. This ability to connect and adapt is a hallmark of truly legendary television.

What's Next for Benson?

With Law & Order: SVU continuing its record-breaking run and Law & Order: Organized Crime having concluded its run, fans can anticipate more of Olivia Benson's unwavering dedication to justice. While details about future crossovers are always a pleasant surprise, Hargitay's ability to inhabit the role across different series suggests there's always a possibility for Benson to pop up where we least expect her.
