Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Ditches Hidden Blade Combat for Dual Swords
Ubisoft's latest iteration of the beloved pirate adventure, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, has made a significant departure from the original's combat mechanics. Director Richard Knight explains the rationale behind removing Edward Kenway's iconic hidden blade as a primary combat tool.
The high seas adventure of Assassin's Creed Black Flag is set to return with Black Flag Resynced, but some of its most iconic combat elements are notably absent. Specifically, players will find that Edward Kenway’s signature hidden blade, a staple of the franchise for years, has been relegated from primary offensive weapon to a finishing move. Instead, dual cutlasses will serve as Kenway's main armament in open combat. This significant shift in gameplay has been explained by Richard Knight, director of Black Flag Resynced.
Knight elaborated on the decision during an interview with YouTuber JorRaptor, stating that the development team had to prioritize core combat mechanics for the new version. "During development, if you looked at Edward — he's so powerful right now and has so many tools, and so we prioritized core combat because we needed to nail that,” Knight explained. The extensive animations and varied kill methods associated with multiple weapons, including the hidden blade and throwing daggers, were deemed lower priority. "Something like throwing weapons, while it's cool, it's just like, ‘He already has ten ways to kill somebody.’ So, given the cost to reinvent the feature and rebuild it from the ground up with today's characters, rigs, and animations, there's a lot more that goes into it. It was just lower-priority for us."
Fan Reaction to Combat Changes
The removal of the hidden blade as a primary combat tool, alongside other changes like visible enemy health and defense bars and a reworked counter chain-kill system, has understandably drawn attention from the dedicated Assassin's Creed fanbase. While Black Flag Resynced has been met with high praise and proved profitable, these combat alterations represent a distinct departure from the original's fluid and often brutal engagement style. Fans have expressed a desire for the return of these beloved mechanics, with many highlighting the unique feel and strategic depth they offered. Knight assured the community that their feedback is being heard, stating, "We can't make any promises [but] we're listening to the community. We're interested in what people want the most.”
What's Next for Black Flag Resynced
While specific details on future updates or potential reintroduction of fan-favorite combat mechanics are scarce, Ubisoft has indicated an openness to community feedback. Players eager to experience Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced will find the game features a host of other enhancements and changes, including updated controls and UI, alongside the new combat focus. The team's commitment to listening suggests that the future of Edward Kenway's piratical exploits might yet incorporate elements that resonate most strongly with long-time fans.
This move by Ubisoft in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced prioritizes core mechanics over iconic flourishes, sparking debate among fans about the evolution of combat in the series.
