Steam Surges Past $15 Billion in 2026, Fueled by Blockbuster Sequels

Valve's PC storefront has already raked in an astounding $15 billion this year, with a handful of major releases driving its success. Analysts point to a strong reliance on established franchises for this massive revenue.

Steam's Monumental 2026 Performance

Valve's digital storefront, Steam, has once again proven its dominance in the PC gaming market, generating an incredible $15 billion in revenue by September 2026. This figure, according to Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics, has already surpassed the platform's total earnings for the entirety of 2023, signaling a potentially record-breaking year. The impressive haul is significantly bolstered by a select group of six games released this year, which collectively contributed nearly $1 billion to Valve's coffers.

Leading the charge among these top performers is Forza Horizon 6, which has revved up over $210.5 million since its launch. Hot on its heels are Crimson Desert and Resident Evil Requiem, securing second and third place with $203.3 million and $200.9 million, respectively. The enduring appeal of established series is further demonstrated by Slay the Spire 2 ($148.4 million) and Subnautica 2 ($139.2 million), both significant revenue generators. Even the more niche Meccha Chameleon managed to pull in $89.8 million.

The Power of Established IPs

A key takeaway from Elliott's analysis is the significant role established franchises play in Steam's financial success. Out of the top six revenue-generating games this year, only two – Crimson Desert and Meccha Chameleon – represent new intellectual properties. The remaining four are direct sequels to games that already commanded substantial fanbases, underscoring a trend where players gravitate towards familiar, trusted titles.

This reliance on sequels is further emphasized when looking at the top 100 best-selling games released in 2026. While these games collectively generated approximately $2.4 billion, accounting for 15.9% of Steam's overall revenue so far, established IPs dominated the earnings. Of the new-game top 100, 63% were new IPs, but a staggering 52.5% of the revenue, or $1.25 billion, came from established franchises. Crimson Desert, despite being a new IP, is a standout success, accounting for roughly 18% of all revenue generated by new IPs within that top 100 list. This highlights that while new IPs can succeed, they often need to achieve remarkable traction to compete with the financial might of sequels.

What's Next

With the year's end approaching and several high-profile releases still on the horizon, analysts predict Steam could exceed $20 billion in total revenue for 2026. This continued growth suggests a robust market for PC gaming, driven by both passionate fanbases and the consistent appeal of well-loved game series.

Analysis

The data highlights a fascinating trend: while new IPs like **Crimson Desert** are making waves, the sheer commercial power of sequels to beloved games continues to dominate Steam's revenue streams.
